Step 1: Complete the required 8 hours

California requires two specific pieces of initial training before applying for Security Guard Registration:

• 3 hours of Power to Arrest
• 5 hours of Appropriate Use of Force

Step 2: Apply through BreEZe

Students create a BSIS BreEZe account, submit a Security Guard Registration application, and pay the state application fee.

1. Create or log in to a BreEZe account.
2. Select Security Guard Registration.
3. Submit the application and pay the fee.

Step 3: Complete Live Scan fingerprints

Live Scan is required for the DOJ and FBI background checks. Students should use the correct BSIS Request for Live Scan Service form and keep the ATI number receipt.

Step 4: Finish the remaining 32 hours

California requires additional training after a guard’s registration is issued or employment begins:

• Two mandatory courses within 30 days
• The remaining required courses within the first 6 months
